TGI Thursday! (10.17)At press time, the price of gold had just achieved new all-time highs, breaching $2,700 per Troy ounce during intraday trading. The increase aligns with declining U.S. Treasury yields, geopolitical tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East, growing demand from central banks, and two questionable candidates vying for leadership of the free world. But analysts still can’t seem to put their finger on the catalyst for the 30% rise we’ve witnessed so far this year. Just the same, consumers and retail investors seem to understand the rally—that's why gold bars are selling out at Costco.
Curiously, gold mining stocks have been lagging behind the metal’s ascent. Yet, gold miners remain enthusiastically upbeat about the precious metal’s prospects. This week's annual London Bullion Market Association conference closed with attendees predicting on average that gold prices will rise to $2,941 by the time of next October's LBMA event. While that’s good news for Costco shoppers, the less-publicized message was that a plurality of mining industry insiders expect silver to shake off its status as a laggard and outperform gold in the coming year.
It looks like Luckbox has nailed the timing for a gold-focused issue. So, let’s get lucky!
For the past year, Costco’s been selling up to $200 million in gold bars monthly. The wholesale club offers one-ounce bars online for the spot price of gold, plus a 1.6% premium—less than other sources charge. Buying gold from Costco comes with bonuses, too. The company provides a 2% cash reward for using a Citi credit card on purchases. And with an executive membership, priced at $130 annually, members receive an additional 2% rebate.

Goldschläger: Fireball ☄️ for Fancies
Always on the lookout for undervalued assets, we recalled Goldschläger, the cinnamon-schnapps liqueur with thin but visible 24-karat gold flakes floating around in it. Why infuse cinnamon schnapps with real gold flakes? No good reason. Maybe to bedeck your inner bling.
But it was hot stuff in the ’90s. It became the go-to celebratory shot if you just finished a funding round, closed out a profitable trade or had your company acquired. “Going for gold” was the de rigueur ritual for revelers. So, we wondered if Goldschläger was still around.(Yes!) Then, we had to ask if its price rose in line with the recent rally in gold prices. (No!) That’s because there are only 13 milligrams of gold in a 750-milliliter bottle of Goldschläger, which equates to approximately $1.25. While nothing to sneeze at, apparently it’s nothing to ingest, either.
The CDC considers 24-karat gold flakes a non-toxic food additive. Partaking of the soft flakes does no internal damage. In the spirit of this gold-focused issue (and because we’re spirits snobs), we thought we’d challenge our mixology skills to create a captivating Goldschläger cocktail to commemorate gold’s recent rally. After many unsuccessful attempts with the sweet cinnamon spirit, this was our best concoction.
The Gold Bull
Pour Red Bull over ice into a tall highball glass. Add a couple of dashes of Fee Brothers lemon bitters and a lemon twist. Then, pour that bottle of Goldschläger down the nearest drain.

The Prediction Trade
Election Wagering's Big Debut 🇺🇸
The Kalshi online prediction market platform has been on fire over the past two weeks, ever since a federal appeals court legalized betting on election outcomes for the first time in more than 100 years. After the ruling, the platform introduced more than 30 election markets, and an electronic billboard in Times Square. Yesterday, we caught up with Kalshi co-founderTarek Mansour who told Luckbox that “regulated election financial markets are going to be massive in the U.S. The influx of traders has been incredible. We’re seeing 150%-200% increases in new traders each day.”
Perhaps most notable has been the inexplicable price surge that former President Trump has enjoyed over Harris in the past 48 hours. While polling aggregators at 538, The Silver Bulletin and Real Clear Politics show Harris with a 2%-3% lead over Trump, Kalshi and offshore prediction market Polymarket, are forecasting a decisive Trump win. The accuracy of prediction markets as a forecasting tool is on the line and so are millions of dollars in wagers by new traders.
