Presidential election years are always fun for traders. The markets in election years are predictably unpredictable, but the noise levels are always high. The constant chatter, hyperbole, and political mudslinging is comedic, engaging, and ultimately disturbing. Regardless, as a trader, it all seems like nonsensical background noise. Traders are very comfortable just sitting back and waiting for the inevitable volatility pop. Currently, the tradable fear indices are unfortunately hovering near historic lows. This seems to imply, dysfunctional or not, there’s not too much concern about the players.
Volatility is resting in a lull state because dysfunction, albeit discouraging, is believed to mitigate risk through inaction. It’s an incredible equalizer and universal conqueror of fear. Still, as a great nation, we simply deserve better. Not just better choices, but better discourse, better focus and better leaders. For the first time in my life, the best choice for leader of the free world is ‘other.’ Other implies “What other sizes do you have?” or “What other toppings do you have?” Or, “I think you mean my other child.” Other is not how we should choose who lives in the White House. Although it’s not too late, two new choices are unrealistic. Fingers crossed, and Godspeed for America.
