Trouble in the Skies, Options, Betting Markets, Tulsi Gabbard, the TSA, Music and more
Thank goodness its Thursday! And, the holiday-inspired gift-trading season seems to be off to a very early start. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was no doubt looking to deflect attention from his questionable recent re-election when he began his weekly television show on Monday by declaring that “This year and to honor you all ... I am going to decree the beginning of Christmas on October 1.”
Then, yesterday, in the spirit of the new holiday season, U.S. Justice Department officials gave themselves a gift by seizing Maduro’s presidential airplane on a runway in Florida.
Venezuela ranks 10th among OPEC oil-producing countries and holds the world’s largest strategic oil reserve. They’re pretty cozy with Russia, China and Iran, too. And, this year, they’ll begin celebrating Christmas on October 1.

Pineapple Excess
We’re always on the lookout for an investible new trend. So, reports that the price of pineapples had skyrocketed because of production problems caught our interest. Then we glimpsed Del Monte’s new $400 Rubyglow pineapple. But we weren’t ready for what we found down the pineapple rabbit hole. It appears pineapple emojis are proxies for sex. Position a real one upside down in a shopping cart in Spain, and it signals you’re looking for a partner. Putting one on a porch is a mark of the polyamorous. The Prediction Trade:
Failure to Launch? Bet on It. 🚀
For insight into the negative sentiment surrounding Boeing, take a look at Kalshi, the events prediction market platform. A Kalshi spokesperson believes their markets are telling “a story about two aerospace companies [Boeing and SpaceX] on vastly different trajectories.” Kalshi’s prediction market traders seem bearish on the probabilities of Boeing-assisted NASA space initiatives, while decidedly bullish on pending SpaceX launches. For example, traders assess the probability of a 2026 NASA moon landing (originally scheduled for 2025 and then pushed back) at 10%. Boeing is heavily involved in that effort. But traders on the same platform have high (70%) expectations that SpaceX will end this year with more than 130 launches. While SpaceX launched only 98 rockets last year, it has already launched 85 this year through August.
Fake Financial News:
No, Likes 👍 Don't Cause Spikes ⬆️
What do mobsters and traders have in common? Besides a keen fashion sense, it's the motto “nobody knows nothin’.” So imagine my delight when I came across this article on how social media is driving the returns in the stock market.
The author, George Kailas, starts with his version of lazy college paper writing: “There are around 8 billion people in the world. Of them, approximately 5 billion use social media. (Wow, is this eligible for a Pulitzer?) It should come as no surprise social media has the power to move markets.” He then smashes a bunch of arguments together to suggest meme stocks, price surges and customer boycotts are all because of social media.
I’m not buying it. There's a load of research on the topic, but the gist is simple: Stock prices tend to revert to their mean after significant deviations, particularly over longer time frames. Can a tweet cause a temporary spike or drop in a stock’s price? Absolutely! Should this be the basis of your trading decisions? Hell, no.
Beware of financial "gurus" who write articles solely for clicks, and whose bios state they started at a hedge fund at 17. They just curve fit cherry-picked data to fit their opinions.
